Arts Alive January 19th at 8AM: Meredith Monk and Vicki Ray
Meredith Monk brought her newest music-theater work, On Behalf of Nature, to UCLA's Freud Playhouse this week. It's hard to describe Monk in just a few words--she's a composer, a singer, a director, a choreographer and a filmmaker. On Behalf of Nature takes as its subject an intimate connection to nature and the fragility of its ecology. Monk talks to Arts Alive this week about On Behalf of Nature and what it means to her to truly listen to the natural world.
To hear more of Monk's work, tune in to KUSC's Los Angeles Master Chorale in Concert broadcast Sunday at 7PM. For that concert, the Chorale performs three of Monk's compositions (Weave, Night and Songs of Ascension) and Arvo Part's Miserere.
Pianist Vicki Ray
Pianist Vicki Ray is a founding member of the Piano Spheres concert series, now in its 19th season. The mission of Piano Spheres is to support the composition and performance of major new works for the piano, expanding the piano repertoire by commissioning new music. For Tuesday's Piano Spheres concert at Zipper Concert Hall, Ray has invited musical luminaries Sara Andon, Erika Duke Kirkpatrick, Lars Hoefs, Aron Kallay, Joanne Pearce Martin, and Jeanne Skrocki for an evening of "radical chamber music." Alan Chapman talks to Ray about how she became the musician she is and Tuesday's concert.
The simple concept behind the "Up" documentary series has kept audiences hooked since the first film was release in 1964. For the movie, a documentary crew filmed 14 British children to explore how the UK class system dictated what kinds of lives were available to Britons. Seven years later, director Michael Apted returned with the documentary "Seven Up", which checked in on the original participants. From then on, Apted has returned to film those participants every seven years. Film critic Kenneth Turan talks about the latest in the series "56 Up."
Next week on Arts Alive, Up Series director Michael Apted sits down with Elaine Dutka to talk about these landmark films.
