Arts Alive for June 1, 2013: Mark Morris Dances to Ojai, LA Opera Heads West, Local Pianist Competes at Van Cliburn
This week on Arts Alive: three stories about taking a show on the road.
Mark Morris Dances to Ojai
Choreographer Mark Morris is known for his technical acumen, musicality and ability to balance delicacy of movement with raw power. He founded the Mark Morris Dance Group in 1980 and co-created a company with dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov ten years later. He's choreographed for the world's top ballet companies, but he's moving to a different beat this week. Morris is the music director for this year's Ojai Music Festival (this Thursday through Sunday in Ojai). He talks to Alan Chapman about how this year's festival is all about American composers and community experiences.

Local Pianist Competes at Van Cliburn
Ventury County native Sean Chen is, at 24, headed for a major career as a concert pianist. He has his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard and is currently working on his Artist Diploma at Yale. But right now, he's in Texas competing at the prestigious Van Cliburn International piano competition in Fort Worth. So far, he's made it to the semifinals. Reporter Gail Wein is following his progress.
