A Conversation with Danielle Brazell, The Mayor's Pick to Head LA's Cultural Affairs Department

Posted By: Kelsey McConnell · 6/27/2014 12:17:00 PM

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti has tapped Danielle Brazell to head the city's Department of Cultural Affairs. Brazell is the founding executive director of the advocacy organization Arts for LA. She's the former artistic director of Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica and director of special projects for the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. Pending confirmation by the city council, Brazell will become the fifth GM of Cultural Affairs and the only person in that post to be a native Angeleno who's arts career has revolved entirely around Los Angeles. I talked to Brazell about her belief that the arts save lives and the arts policy issues currently facing the city. First, I asked her to define the role of Cultural Affairs Department GM.
