LA's Little Tokyo Welcomes Hundreds For First World Taiko Gathering

Posted By: Sheila Tepper · 7/8/2014 12:22:00 PM

The inaugural World Taiko Gathering is about to bring over 500 participants from taiko groups throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia to LA's Little Tokyo for three days of workshops, discussion sessions, taiko performances, and community-building activities. As part of the gathering, a three-concert series called Taiko Nation will be held Saturday, July 19 at 8PM and on Sunday, July 20 at 2PM and 7PM. The LA-based TAIKOPROJECT will host Taiko Nation. TAIKOPROJECT is known for blending traditional Japanese taiko with storytelling and choreography.

I was fortunate to be able to sit in on a rehearsal and interview TAIKOPROJECT's Managing Director Bryan Yamami and Artistic Director Masato Baba. Listen to the player below to hear our conversations.

Taiko Nation takes place on Saturday, July 19 at 8PM and on Sunday, July 20 at 2PM and 7PM at the Aratani/Japan America Theatre, located at 244 S. San Pedro St. in Little Tokyo. More information at www.jaccc.org.
