KUSC-aired radio series wins 2006 Clarion Award A Voice for the Silenced produced by network affiliate CPRN
August 1, 2007
Los Angeles - A Voice for the Silenced, a five-part series on the lives and works of composers affected by the Holocaust, has won the 2006 Clarion Award. Aired by Classical KUSC (91.5 FM) in May of 2005, and produced by the station’s affiliate network Classical Public Radio Network (CPRN), it was selected in the category of Radio Documentary Series for Public Radio.
"This award," said KUSC CEO Brenda Barnes, "recognizes both the value of this documentary and the outstanding work done by Executive Producer Karla Walker; Producer/Host Monika Vischer; Conductor James Conlon, and Audio Producer Martin Skavish.
We congratulate everyone involved for this well-deserved recognition. It is the kind of rich programming our listeners deserve." In the five-hour radio series, Conlon and Vischer rediscover lost music of the Holocaust. From the extraordinary compositions written in the Terezin concentration camp, to music written before the war, and ultimately forgotten, to music written in America’s safe harbors, A Voice for the Silenced explores the lives of these composers. The Clarion Awards are presented annually by the Association for Women in Communications, an organization that champions the advancement of women all across the field, by recognizing excellence, promoting leadership and helping to position its members in the evolving communications era.
