Creative Kids Central

Our New Brahms in 1890s Vienna, has been created for elementary school children aged from four to ten, along with their teachers and parents. Designed around the Brahms Clarinet Trio in A minor (Opus 114), this module introduces children to chamber music through music games and activities that encourage them to understand and master musical concepts. Children learn to identify the shapes and sounds of various musical instruments, and to understand the concept of tempo and rhythm in music. They learn to identify musical phrases; texture, energy, color and mood in melody; and motion and flow in melodic themes. Children also view examples of Viennese art and culture from the 1890s as they learn how artists use their work to communicate ideas, and how art plays a role in reflecting an era’s life and times.

The module also includes an extensive lesson plan for teachers that meets state and national standards in music education. The lesson plan provides simple cross-curricular activities that teachers can use in their classrooms, along with a complete list of learning concepts, objectives and evaluation tools that have been developed exclusively for the Brahms module.

Musical Moments

Schools across the country are cutting back on arts and music classes. This leaves many parents searching for ways to properly take advantage of music’s unique ability to stimulate young minds

Classical KUSC 91.5 FM released "Musical Moments: Activities for Kids and Parents," a CD that was developed in association with the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

“Musical Moments: Activities for Kids and Parents” was conceived as a companion to the book, “Raising Musical Kids,” written by Dr. Robert Cutietta, Dean of the USC Thornton School of Music.

The CD featured musical selections chosen from the school’s library of live concert recordings. It is accompanied by a colorful booklet, which outlines for parents interactive and fun activities that develop your children’s intellectual curiosity and love for music.

Though no longer available, proceeds from the sale of this benefit CD went to The Music Center of Los Angeles County Education Division and the USC Thornton School of Music Scholarship Fund.
