SoCal Sunday Night

Pacific Symphony

Carl St. Clair leads the orchestra in a concerts from this season, recorded at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The programs are hosted by Rich Capparela.

February 18: California Dreamin'

Part of the inaugural California Festival, a treasure trove of music celebrating the Golden State’s legacy of experimentation and free-spirited artistry, this concert features a new composition by Gabriella Smith, whose work is described as “high-voltage and wildly imaginative,” along with other pieces inspired by the diversity and richness of our state. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth, the concert also features Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4, performed by Van Cliburn Piano Competition Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko.

February 25: New World Symphony

Drawing on Native American and African American musical themes and Bohemian folk tunes, Dvorák’s masterpiece weaves a unique musical tapestry that remains one of the most popular works of classical music. Chopin's romantic Piano Concerto No. 2 features French pianist David Fray.

March 3: Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto A masterpiece of emotion and virtuosity, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto features lyrical melodies, expressive solos and a brilliant finale! Known for his "unfailing attractive, golden, and resonant tone" (The Strad), The Washington Post remarked that violinist Paul Huang "possesses a big, luscious tone, spot-on intonation and a technique that makes the most punishing string phrases feel as natural as breathing." He plays on the legendary 1742 “ex-Wieniawski” Guarneri del Gesù on extended loan through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.
