  • LA Phil with Deaf West Theatre: Fidelio

This Thursday and Friday, it’s the return of the critically hailed production of Beethoven’s opera Fidelio that brought together the forces of the LA Phil and Gustavo Dudamel with the company of Deaf West Theatre. The semi-staged production is sung by hearing vocalists, with the drama of the story brought to new levels of expression with “the expressive gestural poetry of sign language.” Beethoven was well into the loss of his hearing as he was writing the work, which tells of “triumph over oppression as the noblewoman Leonore goes undercover to daringly rescue her husband from political imprisonment.” It features the “Prisoner’s Chorus,” celebrating freedom and liberation. You can see a video about the production (produced to coincide with its first run) with KUSC’s Suraj Partha here. The performances are Thursday and Friday at 8pm at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
