Notes from the Fires: Alto Dena

CommunityOn DemandNotes from the Fires

This time on Notes from the Fires, meet Nancy Sulahian. She’s a choral singer with a lovely mellow alto voice and a dry sense of humor. She’s sung with the Los Angeles Master Chorale since 1992, leads the choirs at CalTech, sings with the St James in the City church choir (check out their archive), and is on more than eighty movie soundtracks.

John Rabe and LA Master Chorale veteran Nancy Sulahian at her peaceful rental in Altadena, not far from the site of her family home, which burned in January.

Her family home in Altadena - where she’d lived since the 1960s - burned in January. The fire took everything. This time she talks with host John Rabe about how her music is helping her through it. In a couple weeks, Nancy comes back to tell us why she chose singing in a choir over singing solo, and we’ll explore the beauty of singing in a group of four, or a group of hundreds.

We end today’s episode with Bach’s “Sleepers Awake,” with Anne Akiko Meyers joining the Los Angeles Master Chorale under Grant Gershon.
