Notes from the Fires: Fabulous Freelance Flutist Larry Kaplan
00:00

This time on Notes from the Fires, say this three times fast: Freelance Flutist.

Flutist Larry Kaplan holds the flute on the site of the house he shared with his wife - violinist Amanda Byer - in Altadena. Remarkably, their house number survived the Eaton Fire.

John Rabe

Larry Kaplan says “I’m a journeyman. I walk in and say, ‘Where do I plug in?’” It’s a skill that let him play all over the world, with long stays and short gigs with groups including the LA Phil, The LA Chamber Orchestra, the Long Beach Symphony, the Bolshoi Ballet Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Kaplan was in the pit for The Lion King, and you can hear him on movie soundtracks … and now on Notes from the Fires.

Larry Kaplan and his wife - the violinist Andrea Byer - lost their home in Altadena in the Eaton Fire and they’re still figuring out their future.

Listen to Larry’s conversation with John Rabe, then stick around for the Voodoo Jazz Sonata by Julio Racine — the third movement, played by flutist Laurel Zucker and pianist John Cozza.

This episode of Notes from the Fires introduces us to Christopher Still, second trumpet for the LA Phil. Still lived in Altadena with his wife Amanda, their two young sons, and their two dogs, Luna and Karl Von Hoobie-Doobie. They got out of the house 15-20 minutes after he saw fire in Eaton Canyon.
