Notes from the Fires host John Rabe talks with Denisa Hanna and Maxim Kurzin, the leaders of a music group that may have been hardest hit by the fires. About 10% of the Palisades Symphony Orchestra and the Brentwood Palisades Chorale lost their homes to the Palisades fire in January. But the fire did not stop the players and singers.

To round out today’s episode, we’ll listen to the finale of one of the pieces the PSO played at its triumphant comeback concert in February: Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D Minor, by the Ulster Orchestra under Yan Pascal Tortelier.

We have great news: The Palisades Symphony has found a venue for its next concert! The all-volunteer orchestra performs June 29th at 4pm at the Heart of LA Arts and Rec Center, at 615 South La Fayette Park Place, Los Angeles, CA 90057. The program is a unique sampling of 130 years of Broadway, decade by decade … curated with Broadway icon Michael Feinstein! The concert is free, but donations are welcome.

Notes from the Fires: Tesserae

Perhaps no musicians we’ve heard from in Notes from the Fires so far have lost so much … yet retained so much optimism. Alex Opsahl and Ian Pritchard, founders of the Baroque ensemble Tesserae, were in Europe with their two young boys on January 7.
