This time on Notes from the Fires, have a cup of coffee and pastries in Azusa in the first part of John Rabe’s conversation with Juhi Bansal. She’s a socially conscious composer, conductor, and teacher from India and Hong Kong, and the first person we’re heard from in this series who will not be returning to their neighborhood - in her case, Altadena. (Next week, Juhi will reveal which of the radio stars you know and love on Classical California … is her former student.)

To wrap up today, let’s hear music from another person who took traditions from their homeland and made music in LA … one of our Golden Age of Hollywood composers, Erich Wolfgang Korngold. We’re going to hear Marietta’s Song from Die Tote Stadt. This is the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kirill Karabits, with Nicola Benedetti on violin.
And we have great news: The Palisades Symphony has found a venue for its next concert. The all-volunteer orchestra performs June 29th at 4pm at the Heart of LA Arts and Rec Center, at 615 South La Fayette Park Place, Los Angeles, CA 90057. The program is a unique sampling of 130 years of Broadway, decade by decade … curated with Broadway icon Michael Feinstein! The concert is free, but donations are welcome.
