A Hilarious New Take on a Christmas Classic
00:00

During this season of numerous Nutcrackers, writer and performer Sandra Tsing Loh offers an alternative view of Tchaikovsky’s ballet in a show titled Sugar Plum Fairy, in which she plays a 12-year-old girl who dreams of playing Clara in The Nutcracker.

The story has its roots in Loh’s youth, when her older sister was a great ballet student while she was “the kid who would put a pillowcase on my head and dance to records in the living room.”

Loh left the living room performances behind and embarked on a career as a playwright, actor, radio commentator, educator, and bestselling author. And now, with Sugar Plum Fairy, she’s created a holiday show for all ages which she describes as a “G-rated, Rocky Horror, Yule thing.”

Sandra Tsing Loh’s whimsical Sugar Plum Fairy, a kid-friendly holiday show that includes refreshments, runs through Sunday, December 22nd at The David Henry Hwang Theatre in downtown LA’s Little Tokyo. Bart DeLorenzo directs. The cast also features Shannon Holt and Tony Abatemarco. Tickets at eastwestplayers.org.
